Senior Partner
Totsie Memela-Khambule is Managing Director of the Post Bank, part of the South African Post Office. She is tasked with providing services to ‘unbanked’ members of urban and rural communities to help integrate the communities into the broader economy.
Ms Memela-Khambule has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from the University of Swaziland and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Zimbabwe.
She has completed a range of post-graduate business programmes at the Wits Business School, the Rand Afrikaans University, the Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in New York, and the Wits / Harvard Business School.
Ms Memela-Khambule was a fellow with the International Women’s Forum and was nominated for the Duke and Graduate School of Business Fellowship programme focusing on Ethical leadership for Emerging Leaders from both South Africa and USA.
She serves as Chair of the Rural Housing Loan Fund and is a board member of Advice@work, a division within the Momentum Group, and the International Partnerships for Microbiocides, an NGO focusing on research solutions for HIV/Aids prevention for women.
Ms Memela-Khambule is a member of the Institute of Directors and a member of the International Women’s Forum of South Africa (IWFSA).
She has been extensively involved in community and professional organisations and forums including :
• Vice Chairperson for the World University Services (Zimbabwe)
• Commissioner for the Strauss Commission (Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Rural Financial Services)
• Committee member for the Standing Committee for the Revision of the Bank Act
• Task team member of the Rural Finance Programmes under the Department of Agriculture.
Ms Memela-Khambule began her career in Swaziland during the Anti Apartheid days in 1978 involved in internal political recruitment. She moved to Zimbabwe in 1988 to further her studies taking responsibility for managing the Department of Manpower and Development office. She returned to South Africa in 1991 joining then Secretary General of the ANC Cyril Ramaphosa’s office as an Administration coordinator.
In 1993 Ms Memela-Khambule joined Nedcor as Community Liaison Manager and was promoted to Branch Manager in 1994. She was appointed Regional Manager for People’s Bank in 1996 where she was responsible for managing 25 branches in three provinces. She moved to the Land Bank in 1998 where she was appointed General Manager: Operations. In January 2000 Ms Memela-Khambule was appointed Acting Managing Director, a position she held for 18 months before her most recent promotion to Managing Director.
In her private capacity, Ms Memela-Khambule mentors young leaders through the IWFSA’s fellowship programme, and participates in Forums which enable access to disadvantaged communities.
