Totsie Memela-Khambula is Non Executive Chairman of Memela Pratt and Associates. She is also the CEO of Eduloan - a medium-sized company that improves people’s lives through financial access to Education. Eduloan was established in 1996 and has provided R2.7bn in loans since its establishment. These loans predominantly support individuals who are formally employed but are not poor enough for government bursary funding and whose low income thresholds deny them access to traditional banking products.
Ms Memela-Khambula holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from the University of Swaziland and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Zimbabwe. She has completed a range of executive programmes at Wits Business School, the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), the Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in New York, as well as Wits / Harvard Business School.
Ms Memela-Khambula was a fellow with the International Women’s Forum and is currently a member of the South African chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWFSA). She was nominated for the Duke and Graduate School of Business Fellowship programme focusing on Ethical Leadership for Emerging Leaders from both South Africa and USA. Ms Memela-Khambula is also a member of the Institute of Directors. She is a director of Cadiz. Her corporate social investment work includes her role as a director in the International Partnerships for Microbiocides, (IPM) – a research-orientated NGO on HIV/AIDS prevention that focuses on women. She has been extensively involved in community and professional organisations and forums including :
• Vice Chairperson for the World University Services (Zimbabwe)
• Commissioner for the Strauss Commission (Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Rural Financial Services)
• Committee member for the Standing Committee for the Revision of the Bank Act
• Task team member of the Rural Finance Programmes under the Department of Agriculture.
In her private capacity, Ms Memela-Khambula mentors young leaders through the IWFSA’s fellowship programme, and participates in forums which grant access to disadvantaged communities.
Ms Memela-Khambula began her career in 1978 in Swaziland and was responsible for internal political recruitment for the ANC.. She moved to Zimbabwe in 1988 to further her studies and managed the office of the Department of Manpower and Development. She returned to South Africa in 1991 and joined the office of the former Secretary General of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, as an Administration Co-ordinator.
In 1993 she joined Nedcor as Community Liaison Manager and was promoted to Branch Manager in 1994. She was appointed Regional Manager at People’s Bank in 1998 where she served as General Manager: Operations. In January 2000 Ms Memela-Khambula was appointed Acting Managing Director at the Land Bank - a position she held for 18 months before being promoted to Managing Director. She was MD of the Post Bank from 2006 to 2010. She took the helm at Eduloan in October 2010. Her role as CEO allows her to fulfil her passion of providing access to opportunities and improving the lives of the urban and rural poor.
