Totsie Memela is Non Executive Chairman of Memela Pratt and Associates, a leading executive search company in South Africa. She is the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Women's Development Bank (WBD), a leading organisation in pro-poor microfinance for women. Previously, she was the CEO of Eduloan - a medium-sized company that improves people’s lives through financial access to Education.
Ms Memela holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from the University of Swaziland and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Zimbabwe. She has completed a range of executive programmes at Wits Business School, the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), the Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in New York, as well as Wits / Harvard Business School.

Ms Memela was a fellow with the International Women’s Forum and she is currently a member of the South African chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWFSA). She was nominated for the Duke and Graduate School of Business Fellowship programme focusing on Ethical Leadership for Emerging Leaders from both South Africa and USA. Ms Memela is also a member of the Institute of Directors. Ms Memela is President of Girl Guides South Africa.

Ms Memela has been extensively involved in community and professional organisations and forums including:

   Non Executive Director at Alexander Forbes Group Holdings Board
   Member of Council, University of Johannesburg
    Director of the International Partnerships for Microbiocides (IPM) - a research-oriented NGO on HIV/AIDS
    Vice Chairperson for the World University Services (Zimbabwe)
   Commissioner for the Strauss Commission (Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Rural Financial Services)
   Committee member for the Standing Committee for the Revision of the Bank Act
   Task team member of the Rural Finance Programmes under the Department of Agriculture.

Ms Memela mentors young leaders both in her private capacity and in support of the IWFSA’s fellowship programme.
She began her career in 1978 in Swaziland and was responsible for internal political recruitment for the ANC.. She moved to Zimbabwe in 1988 to further her studies and managed the office of the Department of Manpower and Development. She returned to South Africa in 1991 and joined the office of the current Deputy President of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, as a National Administration Co-ordinator.

In 1993 she joined Nedcor as Community Liaison Manager and was promoted to Branch Manager in 1994. She was appointed Regional Manager at People’s Bank (within Nedcor Group).

In 1998 Ms Memela left the private sector to serve at the Landbank, a State Owned Entity as an Executive Director: Operations and had an opportunity to act as MD for 18 months and was for the first time accountable to the Board.

She left the Landbank in September 2001 and joined First Rand Group where she served as an executive in Special Projects for 9 months and later as CEO: Customer Service FNB Home Loans.

She was MD of the Post Bank from 2006 to 2010. She took the helm at Eduloan in October 2010 where her role as CEO allowed her to fulfill her passion for providing access to education finance solutions, and improving the lives of the urban and rural poor.
